Setting Your GOALS

"Winning isn't everything, but wanting to win is."

-Vince Lombardi (1913-1970), a legendary American football coach.

The first month of a new year, is the ideal moment for GOAL SETTING. Some simple tips organized in three steps, may help you while you are drafting your 2012 GOALS:

1) DO A QUICK REVIEW OF 2011 - Look back to the priorities set for your organization and how much have you contributed to these GOALS:

a) What was achieved. How and Why?

b) What was missed - Why?

c) How much has your function, and you as an individual, contributed to the achievement your organization's 2011 GOALS.

2) DO A QUICK VISIONING EXERCISE - Look forward to the already known 3 to 5 years objectives of your organization:

a) What is your Organizational strategy for the future.

b) What must be done sooner than later to get there.

After you have looked back and forward, you should now concentrate in finding out which ones should be the key priorities for 2012, and then draft your 2012 GOALS:

a) Which ones are the 2012 key business priorities for your organization?

b) How can your function, and you contribute to these key business priorities?

c) How can you translate your contributions in S.M.A.R.T.E.R* goals?

d) Do some prioritization/selection.

e) Share your draft with others (peers, subordinates, superiors). Get and incorporate their views/comments.

f) Analyze the resources you will need.

g) Analyze the potential constraints you will face.

h) Set some measurements, so you can periodically check how much, and how well you are progressing towards the achievements of your 2012 goals.
